Chain Link Fence: Galvanized Steel vs. Vinyl-Coated Steel
By ProMatcher Staff
Chain Link Fence Materials
Chain link fences are most commonly made of galvanized steel or vinyl-coated steel. Although they do not offer much privacy, chain link fences are cost-effective and practical. Vinyl-coated steel is more expensive, but it has a cleaner look and it will not rust.
Galvanized Steel
The Good:
- Coated with zinc - Industrial, commercial look - More affordable - Can be painted
The Bad:
- Won’t last as long as vinyl-coated - May corrode over time - Less weather-resistance
The Bottom Line: A galvanized steel chain link fence is an economical and practical choice. They are most commonly used for commercial and industrial purposes. Although there are no colored options, they can be painted fairly easily. The galvanization process offers some protection from corrosion, but the fence may begin to rust after an extended period of time.
Vinyl-coated Steel
The Good:
- Better weather resistance - Additional protection from rusting and corrosion - Longer lasting - Sleeker look - Wide variety of colors available
The Bad:
- More expensive - Minimal privacy
The Bottom Line: Vinyl-coated chain link fences are very durable. The vinyl coating offers additional protection from corrosion and weathering. These fences are commonly found in parks, residential neighborhoods, and backyards. You will pay an additional cost for the vinyl coating, but it will look nicer for a longer period of time. You can also pick a color that will blend in nicely with your lawn and garden.
