What are the parts of a chain link fence?
There are four main components of a chain link fence: the fence fabric, the framework, the fittings, and the gate.
1. Fence fabric
- Comes in different gauges of steel
- Mesh size can vary
- Sold in rolls
- Comes in different heights (3-12 ft.)
- Comes in different colors
- Galvanized and vinyl-coated steel fabrics available

2. Framework
- Variety of Chain link fence posts available
- Posts typically made of wood, metal, or plastic
- Rails are attached to the set and terminal posts
- Helps create tension, pull the fence fabric tight
- Terminal posts holes are filled with gravel and concrete
3. Fittings and Hardware
- Help bring posts, rails, and fence fabric together
- May include brace bands, hinges, latches, and rail ends
- Post caps can be simple or highly decorative
- Difficult to adjust once fully tightened
4. Gate
- Vary in shape and size
- Can provide additional security or serve as decoration
- Requires some ground clearance to open and close properly
